Airport plans to be Europe's most environmentally friendly
01.08.07
Newcastle Airport wants to become the most environmentally-friendly hub in Europe. The airport will introduce green measures in order to combat its contribution to climate change and to reduce its carbon footprint after its new Climate Change policy was approved by its board of directors.
The airport will launch the project by logging carbon emissions created by its incoming and outgoing transport - including ground operations, passengers' transport and aircraft arrivals and departures. It will then use these figures to find ways to reduce the impact it has on the environment, and will buy carbon offset for anything it cannot reduce.
Newcastle Airport's board has approved proposals outlined in the hub's Climate Change policy, which will also include giving money to local projects in order to help improve the local environment. Its head of planning and corporate affairs, Graeme Mason, told local paper The Journal: 'Our aim is to become known as one of Europe's greenest airports.'
'We want to put ourselves ahead of other airports and we believe that our climate change policy will not only do that. It will complement the economic benefit that the airport brings by channelling resources into reducing the region's carbon footprint.'
