Runway project finished early

Newcastle Airport has a newly resurfaced runway after the work was completed five weeks ahead of schedule. The resurfacing project was necessary to meet the demands of the increased number of aircraft using the airport. It was last resurfaced 15 years ago.
The project involved removing the existing runway surface and laying approximately 16,500 tonnes of new asphalt in 125m-long sections each night. Just under 1,000 runway lights were also replaced. The project started at the beginning of January, and was carried out by contractors Tarmac between 23:30 and 05:45 each night so that flights were not affected.
Newcastle Airport's chief executive, Dave Laws, said: ‘Over the past 15 years we have experienced huge growth, with a dramatic increase in aircraft movements. We have welcomed the arrival of low cost airlines such as easyJet, and more recently the Emirates' A330 Airbus. With over 5 million passengers a year and around 200 arrivals and departures every day, the resurfaced runway is vital for safe and efficient travel.'
