Air rage man avoids jail

An oil rig worker who shouted abuse at police after he was arrested for upsetting an air hostess during a flight from Aberdeen to Newcastle Airport has avoided jail. Darren Russell, of Biddick Hall Drive, South Shields, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk on an aircraft after being rude to a stewardess during a flight on January 27.
The 44-year-old was to be tried for being drunk on an aircraft on Friday, but prosecutors accepted it could not be proved that he was drunk. Newcastle Crown Court heard Mr Russell had been served an alcoholic drink on the flight but trouble flared when the stewardess was too busy to get him another. His outburst left the flight attendant ‘distressed’ and he was arrested after the plane landed at Newcastle Airport. He then became abusive towards police involved in his arrest.
He admitted a public order offence and was ordered to pay £250 fine and £250 costs.
