Airport receives Carbon Standard award; to cut emissions by 15%

Newcastle Airport has published its energy policy, which sets out a series of measures to make its operations more environmentally friendly, the Journal reports. The policy announcement comes as the is awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of the work already undertaken to reduce energy use, making it one of the only airports in the UK to receive the accolade.
The energy policy sets a target for Newcastle International to reduce its carbon footprint by 15 percent by 2015. To achieve this it will introduce a range of measures, including switching to LED light bulbs and auditing different sections of the site to discover how much energy is being used by various devices such as telephones, computers and lamps and where cuts can be made.
Finance director Simon Fisher said: ‘This new Energy Policy plays an important part in the airport’s business strategy. Our commitment to delivering the goals set out in our policy is underlined by the financial and management investments being made.'
'As one of the UK’s leading airports, we take our environmental and climate change obligations seriously and we are committed to operating the airport in a sustainable manner. As such, our climate change policy was developed to outline the carbon reduction targets we aim to deliver over the next 5 years.’
The Carbon Trust Standard has been awarded by the Carbon Trust Standard Company, which is a Government-funded body aimed at promoting energy efficiency in business. Harry Morrison, general manager at the Carbon Trust Standard Company, said: ‘We congratulate Newcastle Airport on their certification.’
