Thousands of weapons seized in 2007
07.01.08
Weapons ranging from knuckle-dusters to cleavers were seized from holidaymakers at Newcastle Airport in 2007. Security staff confiscated thousands of items from passengers arriving or departing from the airport last year, it has announced.
Airport manager Jon Sunderland said: 'A large number of prohibited items were confiscated from passengers. Many were sharp items, some of which are actually illegal and passengers are referred to the police. They ranged from scissors to replica firearms or even real firearms.'
'In most cases, items that are confiscated are innocent. For example, we have a lot of incidents of people taking extra kitchen knives out to holiday homes on the continent and things like that, but unfortunately we can't let people travel with them on the plane, they must be in hold luggage.'
