Air traffic controller in court
07.09.09
Security guards prevented a possible disaster by calling the police when an air traffic controller arrived for work at Newcastle Airport drunk, the Sun reports. Watch manager Neil Stewart, 55, had already put lives at risk by driving to the airport whilst over the limit, and appeared in court today charged with driving offences.
The security guards smelt alcohol on Mr Stewart's breath as he arrived for work. They telephoned the police, who arrested him and found he was twice the drink-drive limit.
Mr Stewart, who quit his job as an air traffic controller after being suspended, admitted drink-driving and being over the limit when reporting for duty. He was given a 3 year driving ban and 12-month community order.
