Small plane comes off runway; closes airport

A light aircraft left the runway as it landed at Newcastle Airport on Monday night. The privately-owned Cherokee plane came to rest on the grass at the south end of the runway shortly after 19:30.
The aircraft's front tyre burst and the pilot was seen by medical staff but did not need treatment. The airport was shut for 30 minutes and three aircraft were forced to wait before they could take off.
The Air Accident Investigation Branch was informed about the incident, but airport staff will carry out the internal investigation.
