Six arrested over cigarette and tobacco smuggling
09.01.10
Six passengers were arrested after they arrived on a flight from Tenerife, accused of trying to bring duty-free cigarettes and tobacco back into the country, the Echo reports. Customs officers at Newcastle Airport seized 20,000 cigarettes and 200kg of tobacco from the luggage of the passengers. They estimate the unpaid duty was £33,000.
The suspects, aged in their late teens to mid-30s, were arrested after they tried to walk through the 'nothing to declare' channel. All of the tobacco and cigarettes were confiscated and will be destroyed.
