Lufthansa passengers up 78 percent

Lufthansa increased the number of passengers carried to and from Newcastle Airport by more than 78 percent in 2008, despite the economic downturn and record fuel costs. Its passenger figure of 36,526 was up more than 16,000 on the figures for 2007. Newcastle was way ahead of the airline's average passenger increase in 2008 and also the top ranking UK airport for growth.
Marianne Sammann, Lufthansa's General Manager UK, said: ‘To show any increase in passengers for 2008 is an achievement in view of the economic challenges UK businesses faced towards the end of the year, but our Newcastle Airport growth is outstanding.'
‘The performance also proves an increasing number of people wanting to travel the world from the North East prefer to make their onward connections through our mini-hub at Düsseldorf instead of travelling via the congested London airports.'
‘21 percent of our passengers from Newcastle in 2008 took advantage of the quick and easy onward connections we offer via Dusseldorf where our minimum connection time is just 35 minutes.'
