Newcastle Airport boss calls on Government to axe air tax
11.06.09
The boss at Newcastle Airport has urged the Government to follow the lead of the Netherlands and scrap taxes to defend its flight routes. David Laws, the airport's chief executive, said airport taxes were the single greatest threat for the future, with some routes set to experience a doubling in air passenger duty (APD) in the next two years under Government plans to revise and increase the air tax.
Speaking at the North East Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting, Mr Laws called on the Government to follow the lead of its Dutch counterparts, who performed a taxation U-turn and withdrew its air tax after recognising the severe impact the taxes would have on Schiphol Airport. He said Newcastle Airport, which employs around 3,000 staff, is performing better than many regional airports, but he was concerned for the effects of the tax, which will increase tax on all routes, with long haul passengers paying an extra £20.
