Pilot error a factor in airport crash
13.06.09
Pilot error was partly to blame for a fighter jet overshooting the runway at Newcastle Airport last year, investigators have said. The Tornado, from RAF Marcham in Norfolk, was diverted to the airport on March 5 after hitting a bird. The pilot made an emergency landing, and ran onto grass beyond the runway.
An Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) report released yesterday in to the incident said a fault caused by the bird strike had affected the jets reverse thrust, but that the pilot should have reduced engine power. Neither of the two crew members were hurt in the incident.
The emergency landing caused disruption at the airport and flights did not return to normal until the next day.
