Laser incident reported
15.11.09
A laser was shone at a plane approaching Newcastle Airport, potentially endangering the lives of 160 passengers, the Chronicle reports. Police are hunting those responsible for shining the device at the aircraft as it flew over the Battlehill Estate, in Wallsend, North Tyneside.
The pilot on the easyJet flight from Bristol reported seeing a green laser shone at the plane at around 21:00 on Thursday night. Fortunately, they were not affected and the Airbus 319 landed safely.
Police immediately carried out checks of the area and launched additional patrols, which will continue. Inspector Pam Bridges, of Wallsend Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: ‘I want to remind people of the dangers of shining lasers at aircraft and also point out the penalties, including custodial sentences, which are available to the courts.'
