Passengers warned over major roadworks
16.07.09
Passengers travelling to Newcastle Airport from late next week until the end of September have been warned about major road works that will be taking place on the A1. As a result of the works, journey times to the airport will be affected.
Work to strengthen the Allerdene Bridge will affect travel between Team Valley and the Angel of the North, on both the northbound and southbound carriageways. The project will begin on July 25 and last for 10 weeks.
A contra-flow will be put in place on the northbound carriageway and the southbound carriageway will be closed. The northbound slip road at Kingsway, Team Valley, and the southbound off and on slip roads at Eighton Lodge, near the Angel of the North, will also be shut.
Passengers have been advised to allow considerable extra time for their journey to the airport during the period of the roadworks. Although airlines are aware of the likely delays, they will not accommodate passengers who arrive late for check-in, the airport has warned.
