Airport passengers down by 1 million
17.03.10
Newcastle Airport has lost one million passengers over the last couple of years, as the recession ravaged the aviation trade, the Chronicle reports. The news came when the CAA reported that 2009 saw the largest yearly decline in travellers at UK airports for sixty five years, with passengers falling across the UK.
At Newcastle Airport 4,587,883 passed through the terminal last year, compared with more than 5 million 12 months earlier and over 5.7m in the peak year for the trade of 2007. Airport bosses blamed the falls on fewer families taking holidays due to the recession, as well as companies cutting travel budgets and government air tax increases for the steep decline in passengers.
