Airport to launch investigation after flight delay

Air passengers were removed from a plane at Newcastle Airport yesterday and a ground emergency was called after the captain spotted smoke in the cockpit.
The KLM Boeing 737 travelling to Amsterdam from Newcastle had just been taxied into position shortly after 06:00 when smoke was seen and the captain ordered an evacuation. As a precaution, a ground emergency was declared, with the alarm raised to nearby fire stations.
A spokesman for the fire service said: 'We received a call at about 06:25 from the airport. It was treated as a full emergency. 10 appliances were mobilised to the airport after reports of smoke coming from the cabin of the plane.'
The aircraft was placed back on the stand as fire crews were called to investigate. After a series of checks, it was declared safe but a new part had to be fitted before the plane could leave for the Netherlands, which caused a 5 hour delay.
