Three new £½m fire engines for Newcastle airport
18.03.07
Three new state-of-the art fire engines costing £500,000 each are to be based at Newcastle Airport.
The multi-terrain 'Panthers' allow crews to operate the pumps and attack fires from the safety of the cabs. They also have an extendable boom that can puncture a plane's fuselage and pump over 4,000 litres of water a minute into it. The fire engines can also reach speeds of up to 85 mph enabling them to get to incidents quicker than other vehicles.
A spokesman for the airport said: 'This puts Newcastle Airport at the cutting edge of modern technology. The firefighters are absolutely delighted, and are all excited about using them. We are also gaining lots of interest from other fire departments around the UK and Europe.'
