Airport for sale?
21.04.11
Managers at Newcastle Airport are refusing to comment on speculation that it could be put up for sale, the North Shields Gazette reports. Copenhagen Airports, which owns 49% of the airport, has put its shares up for sale after its backers, Australian group Macquarie Bank, decided to withdraw from the airports sector.
The remaining 51% is owned by the seven local authorities in Northumberland, Durham, and Tyne and Wear, and suggestions that they may also sell have not been denied. A spokesman for South Tyneside Council, which acts as the lead authority for the group, said: ‘We do not wish to comment.’ Council leaders have a right of veto over the sale of the Copenhagen stake.
