Jet2 to take over Gatwick route after BA pull out
22.11.06
Low-cost airline Jet2 has stepped in to take over the Newcastle to Gatwick route after British Airways (BA) announced yesterday that it was scrapping the service. The new Jet2 flights will begin on 25 March next year.
BA said it has taken the decision to stop its Newcastle - Gatwick flights for 'commercial reasons'. The airline will scrap the route next spring, but will continue to fly to Heathrow from Newcastle.
Jet2, which already operates 13 routes from Newcastle, is to take over the Gatwick route just as BA stops its flights. The budget airline plans to operate three flights a day on the route.
A spokesman for Jet2 said: 'Gatwick is the ideal London airport for business and for leisure travellers and is the perfect replacement to a long train or car journey to southern England.'
