23.03.06
A plane was forced to return to Newcastle Airport after a smoke detector signal on board was activated. Emergency services were put on alert as the plane landed.
Tuesday's 19:03 Wideroe airlines flight from Newcastle Airport to Stavanger, Norway, reported an emergency about 15 miles out of Newcastle. The Dash 8 plane, with 18 passengers and 3 crew on board, was diverted back to Newcastle and was met by fire engines.
Passengers on board were taken to the terminal and no signs of fire were found. An engineer on site tested the smoke detection system and found it to be working properly.
The passengers were booked into overnight accommodation in a nearby airport hotel and rebooked on to Wednesday's service or provided with alternative travel arrangements.
