Passenger boost for Metro airlink
23.11.06
Passenger numbers on the Metro link to Newcastle Airport have risen dramatically, operators Nexus revealed. Almost 900,000 people used the airport station in the last year, the company said on the 15th anniversary of the station's opening. This is the highest number since the £12m expansion opened, and reflects a 25% increase over the last 4 years.
Passenger figures are expected to continue to increase, as an estimated 10m travellers could be flying from Newcastle Airport by 2016 according to the airport's Masterplan.
Director General of Nexus, Bernard Garner, said: 'Nexus delivered the airport extension 15 years ago today and since then it has become an asset for the whole region - it still provides the shortest journey time between an airport and a city centre in the UK.'
