Newcastle Airport is to celebrating its 75th birthday on Monday, with plane spotters and aviation enthusiasts to benefit from a one off event. For one day only on July 26 (Monday), there will be a viewing platform for people to visit the airport to watch plans take off and land.
Costing £35,000 to build, the airport opened on 26 July 1935 and consisted of a clubhouse, hangar, workshops, garage and a grass runway. The airport has since changed location, size and, most significantly, the number of passengers.
In the 1960s passenger numbers increased with the introduction of package holidays and a new runway was built, along with a new air traffic control tower. These were officially opened by Harold Wilson - the prime minister at the time. The old control tower was replaced just over a year ago.
