Cigarette smuggler jailed
21.10.09
A crafty cigarette smuggler was jailed yesterday after booking easyJet flights to stock up on thousands of duty-free cigarettes - then not leaving the country. Christopher Campbell used boarding cards for short haul flights to fill suitcases with thousands of cheap cigarettes, then left through the Nothing to Declare channel without ever leaving the country.
Newcastle crown court heard Mr Campbell, 40, from Newcastle, trafficked at least 100,000 cigarettes bought from the duty free store at Newcastle Airport - and made at least £100,000. He admitted evading excise duty, and was jailed for 15 months.
