Light aircraft incident causes flight disruption
26.05.09
A light aircraft came off the runway at Newcastle Airport yesterday, causing disruption to around a dozen other flights. The four-seater single engine plane veered on to the grass yesterday lunchtime, causing its nose wheel to collapse and damaging the propeller. Only the pilot was on board at the time and he was not injured.
Five flights were diverted - 4 to Durham Tees Valley and one to Edinburgh - two outbound flights were cancelled and 5 other outbound flights were delayed by around 40 minutes because of the incident. An airport spokesman said its fire service was on the scene straight away and the Air Accident Investigation Branch had been informed. The runway reopened at about 14:00.
