Anger over airport parking changes
28.04.10
Passengers were confused and upset on the first day of the new parking arrangements at Newcastle Airport, the Chronicle reports. The airport axed its free drop-off zone outside the terminal entrance on Monday, replacing it with a new express car park with a cost of £1 for the first 20 minutes.
Those who want to avoid the charge must use a new car park that a three-minute walk from the terminal, with parking free for 15 minutes instead of the old 5 minutes. Monday was the first day of the new parking scheme and it was met with 'anger from bewildered passengers' who said the changes had not been made clear to them, the newspaper reports.
Many are reported to have been unaware of the new charge until after they had gone through the barriers into the new express car park (the old drop-off zone) and then were forced to pay. Taxi drivers also called the scheme ‘disgusting’ and said the free car park was impractical and too far away from the terminal.
